History
The Neve Horim Retirement Home was the first in Israel.
It was established in 1878 in the Old City of Jerusalem and served as a soup kitchen for the city elders.
A few years later, the founders realized there was a need to find sleep and housing solutions, on top of nourishment, and turned it into a retirement home.
At the beginning of the 20th century, it moved from its location in the Old City to a building located at the entrance to the city (where the central bus station is found nowadays). At that time, it started admitting women and the name was changed to “United Female & Male Elderly Retirement Home.”
In 1965, the construction work for the new building began and in August 1968 it moved to its current permanent place.
In 2020 it was decided to change once more the name into “Neve Horim – The United Jerusalem Retirement Home.”
